Regulatory Update
Limit Scope Radiography License
December 10, 2025; the Massachusetts Public Health Council voted to approve revisions to 105 CMR 125.000: Licensing of Radiologic Technologists to include a new license category for limited scope radiography practice in Massachusetts.
The updated regulations will be promulgated and published by the Radiation Control Program (RCP) in the coming weeks. Once published, the regulations will outline specific requirements for:
- Education and training
- Scope of practice
- Examination and licensure
- Ongoing compliance and oversight
We will share additional details and guidance as soon as the final regulations are available from the RCP.
Radiation Therapy: Proton Beam Therapy
December 10, 2025; U Mass Memorial Health has received final approval to begin construction and installation of a Proton Beam Therapy unit at the UMass Memorial Health Cancer Center in Marlborough, MA. This approval marks a significant expansion of advanced cancer-treatment options for patients across Massachusetts and the broader New England region.
Proton Beam Therapy is a highly targeted form of radiation therapy that allows clinicians to deliver precise doses to tumors while minimizing exposure to surrounding healthy tissue—an especially important advantage in treating pediatric cancers and tumors located near critical organs.
Once operational, the new unit will greatly improve regional access to this treatment. Currently, New England has only three Proton Beam Therapy centers—two at Massachusetts General Brigham and one at Yale New Haven—often resulting in long wait times and lengthy travel for patients.
The addition of a Proton Beam Therapy unit at UMass Memorial Health will expand capacity, reduce barriers to care, and strengthen Massachusetts’ position as a leader in oncology services. Construction and installation are expected to move forward in the coming months, with more updates anticipated as the project progresses.

Massachusetts NPs Granted Full Practice Authority
The MSRT represents and serves as the official voice of radiologic technologists, to all public and professional groups within the Commonwealth, on matters concerning the profession in general and in particular, the practice of radiologic technology. We encourage all Massachusetts technologists to take an active role in advocating for our profession and our patients.
Effective August 7, 2024, the Radiation Control Program transitioned to an online application and renewal process for Radiologic Technologists.
All technologists will need to create an online account at Environmental Health eLicensing Portal and link their existing license/s to your new account in the system. Renewal notices will be sent via email
