On December 10, 2025, the Massachusetts Public Health Council voted to approve revisions to 105 CMR 125.000: Licensing of Radiologic Technologists, formally establishing a new license category for Limited Scope Radiography Practice in Massachusetts.
The updated regulations have now been published by the Radiation Control Program (RCP).
Outlined below are key parameters of the new Limited Scope of Practice in Radiography license:
- Applicants may apply to practice in up to two of the following procedure specialties:
- Chest
- Extremities
- Skull/Sinuses
- Spine
- Podiatric Radiography
- Applicants must submit documentation of appropriate coursework in the selected procedure specialties and achieve a passing score established by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts on the Limited Scope of Practice in Radiography examination administered by ARRT or another national or international certifying board approved by the Department.
- Limited Scope licensees may not practice in the following procedure specialties:
- Fluoroscopy
- Contrast Media
- Mobile Imaging
- Remote Imaging
- Temporary licenses will not be issued for Limited Scope of Practice in Radiography.
- Individuals licensed under this category must complete 24 continuing education units (CEUs) during each two-year license renewal cycle.

Training
There are currently no programs available in Massachusetts for limited scope practice. Any new program that is developed must be reviewed and approved by the Radiation Control Program. This process is likely to take at least several weeks to implement.
